Press Release: Run Your Mini Digger Legally With A 5.5T Machinery Carrier
23rd March 2012
It’s fair to say that falling foul off the law when towing a trailer is something we want to avoid at all costs. However, a clamp down in UK and Irish legislation suggests that many truck operators are finding the trailers they once used for transporting mini diggers and other small equipment are becoming increasingly ineffective.
To meet legislation for towing plant and machinery exceeding 3,500kg, the trailer used must fall into large goods vehicle status and be fitted with ABS and air brakes. To address this legislation, leading trailer manufacturer McCauley Trailers has developed a lightweight and versatile trailer that is able to carry most types of mini digger legally. Specifically designed for the transportation of smaller plant, the MAC 5.5T Machinery Carrier has a low payload yet is capable of carrying up to 5,500kg gross. The trailer gains large goods vehicle status yet is compact in size (4.2m long x 2.5m wide); making it ideal for towing small equipment without the need for a large cumbersome trailer.
McCauley Trailers have supplied the MAC 5.5T Machinery Carrier to the DOE Road Service and Northern Ireland Water in the past. More recently, they are the chosen supplier for leading utilities company KPL Contracts:
"Not only are we now free from risk of penalties from the DOE for running without ABS or Air brakes, the MAC 5.5T Machinery Carrier is much more durable than the galvanised jeep trailers we previously used. Towing these plant trailers behind our lorries at highway speeds meant that very often the axles and wheels did not last more than 1 year. However, with MAC’s commercial axles, larger wheels and heavy construction, the trailers will last well over 8 years, with only a yearly service required. This means that although there was a slightly higher capital outlay in buying these trailers compared to our old galvanised ones, the initial outlay is recuperated within 2 years” stated Conor Lynch, KPL Contracts.
MAC 5.5T Machinery Carriers come with a high specification as standard and are fully equipped with ADR axles, air brakes with EBS, heavy duty mudguards, DOE approved lights, adjustable towing eye and spring assisted ramps as standard. As with all MAC Trailers, a full list of optional extras is available to suit individual operator requirements.
